When do tech internships in Canada open?
When Canadian tech internships get posted, from 1,367 Summer 2026 postings: later than the market overall, centered on Toronto, with a much larger share of fall and winter co-op terms.
By Kevin Tang · Updated October 2026
The short answer
Later than the market overall. In the tracker that feeds Arial's job board, 1,367 of 16,488 Summer 2026 tech internships (8 percent) listed a Canadian location, and only 15 percent of them were up by October 1, 2025, against 22 percent of all internships. Canadian roles caught up after New Year: 38 percent were posted in January and February 2026, and by March 1, 73 percent were up, against 69 percent of the market. Toronto led with 521 postings, followed by Ottawa (178), Montreal (147), and Vancouver (135), and about two thirds of Canadian postings listed an Ontario location. Canada matters even more for fall and winter co-op terms: 45 percent of the internships the tracker labels Winter 2027 listed a Canadian location as of October 20, 2026, or about 3 in 10 counting September roles it still labels Winter 2026. So apply to fall postings as they appear, plan your biggest push for January and February, and watch the co-op terms.
Advice about internship timing usually assumes the US market. Canadian roles run on a different clock, shaped by co-op terms and by employers that post later in the year. We measured that clock from a full season of the tracker behind Arial's job board.
What we measured
We read one snapshot of the SimplifyJobs internship tracker per month from July 2025 to August 2026 and counted every Summer 2026 internship once, using only postings the tracker shows publicly: 16,488 postings. We counted a posting as Canadian if any of its locations was in Canada, including remote in Canada. That gave 1,367 postings at 306 companies; 1,321 of them listed only Canadian locations, 43 also listed a US location, and 3 also listed a location elsewhere. Each posting is dated by the first monthly snapshot that listed it for the season. For fall, winter, and spring terms we used the snapshots through October 2026 and the October 20, 2026 file. The tracker leans toward tech roles, so this is the tech internship market, not every internship in Canada. Monthly snapshots miss roles that are posted and removed within the same month, so these counts are a floor. | Date | Canadian internships posted | All internships posted |
|---|---|---|
| Sep 1, 2025 | 4% | 7% |
| Oct 1, 2025 | 15% | 22% |
| Nov 1, 2025 | 19% | 29% |
| Jan 1, 2026 | 35% | 46% |
| Mar 1, 2026 | 73% | 69% |
| May 1, 2026 | 90% | 91% |
Canadian roles trail the market all fall: by January 1, 2026, 35 percent were up, against 46 percent of all internships. Then they arrive in a rush. 38 percent of the season's Canadian postings went up in January and February 2026, and by March 1 Canada had passed the market, 73 percent to 69. In all, 65 percent of Canadian postings came after New Year, against 54 percent of all postings. If you are searching in Canada, a quiet fall is normal, and January is when to be ready. Where: Toronto first, then Ottawa, Montreal, and Vancouver
| City | Summer 2026 postings |
|---|---|
| Toronto, ON | 521 |
| Ottawa, ON | 178 |
| Montreal, QC | 147 |
| Vancouver, BC | 135 |
| Markham, ON | 42 |
| Oakville, ON | 38 |
| Mississauga, ON | 35 |
| Calgary, AB | 33 |
| Kitchener, ON | 32 |
A posting that lists several cities counts once in each. Toronto alone had more postings than Ottawa, Montreal, and Vancouver combined, and its suburbs add more. Ottawa's count leaves out 28 postings the tracker lists as Kanata, its tech suburb. Ontario as a whole appeared on 895 postings, about two thirds of the Canadian total, and 73 postings were remote in Canada. Who hires tech interns in Canada
| Company | Summer 2026 postings in Canada |
|---|---|
| Bank of Montreal (with BMO) | 83 |
| Autodesk | 65 |
| Nokia | 65 |
| Royal Bank of Canada | 48 |
| CIBC | 48 |
| TD Bank | 38 |
| Electronic Arts | 33 |
| Geotab | 30 |
| Intelcom | 30 |
| Ciena | 28 |
Banks are the largest group of employers: Bank of Montreal, Royal Bank of Canada, CIBC, and TD together posted 217 of these roles. We merged postings the tracker lists under two names for one company: Bank of Montreal and BMO, and CIBC with a capitalization variant; Intelcom is listed as Intelcom | Dragonfly. The earliest Canadian posters, with roles up by October 1, 2025, included Intelcom, Wind River, CIBC, and Kinaxis. The long tail matters too: 147 companies posted exactly one Canadian internship. Co-op terms: where Canada stands out
Canada's share of the market jumps in the fall and winter terms, which fits the four-month co-op terms many Canadian universities run. About one in five Fall 2026 internships on the tracker listed a Canadian location, and 45 percent of the internships labeled Winter 2027 by October 20, 2026 did, against 8 percent of summer roles. That share leaves out about 900 roles posted in September 2026 that the tracker still labels Winter 2026, most likely meant for the coming winter and mostly outside Canada; counting them, Canada's share of the coming winter is closer to 3 in 10. Spring is the exception, at 8 percent of Spring 2027 roles so far. Royal Bank of Canada posted the most Winter 2027 roles in Canada. If your program allows a fall or winter term, you are competing in a market where Canadian employers are a much larger share. Summer 2027 in Canada so far
Summer 2027 is off to a slightly slower start in Canada. On October 20, 2026, only 180 of the 4,127 Summer 2027 internships on the tracker, 4 percent, listed a Canadian location, and 91 of those were still open. At about the same point last season, Canada's share of Summer 2026 postings was between 5 and 6 percent. It is still early, though: last season, 65 percent of Canadian postings came after New Year. How to plan an internship search in Canada
- Apply to the fall postings that fit, but do not treat a quiet October as a bad sign. Most Canadian roles have not posted yet.
- Be ready in January. Have your resume done before the winter break, because January and February bring the largest share of the season.
- Search beyond Toronto proper. Markham, Mississauga, Oakville, Kitchener, and Kanata all post roles under their own names.
- If you are in a co-op program, apply for fall and winter terms too. Canadian employers post a much larger share of those.
The Canadian market is smaller and later than the market overall, but it is not quiet. Its busiest months are January and February, and the students who plan for that are the ones ready when they come.
