Which cities have the most tech internships?
Where 16,488 Summer 2026 tech internships were located, city by city, and how few of them were remote.
By Kevin Tang · Updated October 2026
The short answer
New York and the San Francisco Bay Area have the most tech internships. In the tracker that feeds Arial's job board, 1,206 of the 16,488 Summer 2026 internships (7 percent) listed New York City, and 2,835 (17 percent) listed a Bay Area city, led by San Jose (681) and San Francisco (607). After them came Toronto (521), Chicago (472), London (417), Austin (392), Boston (373), Atlanta (333), and Seattle (282). Remote internships are rare: only 732 postings, 4 percent, offered a remote option, and fewer than 1 percent of hardware roles did. So if you can relocate, aim at the big hubs, where roles are densest; if you cannot, search your own city by role and check weekly, because the long tail is large. About 87 percent of postings listed a US location and 8 percent a Canadian one.
Where you can work shapes your internship search as much as when you apply. We counted where every Summer 2026 tech internship on the tracker behind Arial's job board was located, and how many could be done remotely.
What we measured
We read one snapshot of the SimplifyJobs internship tracker per month from July 2025 to August 2026 and counted every Summer 2026 internship once, using only postings the tracker shows publicly: 16,488 postings. A posting can list several locations (11 percent did), so we counted it once in each city it named, and the city shares add up to more than 100 percent. We merged the tracker's short forms ("NYC" with New York, "SF" with San Francisco). For the Bay Area, we counted a posting once if it listed any of 35 cities from San Francisco and the East Bay south to San Jose; the Seattle area works the same way with Seattle, Redmond, Bellevue, Kirkland, and Bothell. The tracker leans toward US and Canadian tech roles. (SimplifyJobs internship tracker, monthly snapshots from July 2025 (through August 2026 for the Summer 2026 season, through October 2026 for later terms) and the October 20, 2026 file (the repository is renamed for each summer))
The cities with the most internship postings
| City | Summer 2026 postings |
|---|---|
| New York, NY | 1,206 |
| San Jose, CA | 681 |
| San Francisco, CA | 607 |
| Toronto, ON | 521 |
| Chicago, IL | 472 |
| London, UK | 417 |
| Austin, TX | 392 |
| Boston, MA | 373 |
| Atlanta, GA | 333 |
| Seattle, WA | 282 |
New York is the largest single city, with 7 percent of all postings. The Bay Area is larger as a region, because its roles are split across many cities: San Jose, San Francisco, Santa Clara (282), Mountain View (278), Sunnyvale (268), and Palo Alto (149) each list their own. Counted together, 2,835 postings, 17 percent, listed at least one Bay Area city. (Santa Clara ties Seattle for tenth place; we list Seattle because Santa Clara is already part of the Bay Area count.) Seattle works the same way: with Redmond (185), Bellevue (161), and two smaller neighbors, 615 postings listed the Seattle area, counted once each because many list several of these cities. (SimplifyJobs internship tracker, monthly snapshots from July 2025 (through August 2026 for the Summer 2026 season, through October 2026 for later terms) and the October 20, 2026 file (the repository is renamed for each summer))

Most internships are outside the top ten cities
Even the largest hubs hold a minority of the market. About 87 percent of postings listed at least one US location, 8 percent at least one Canadian location (Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Vancouver lead), and 5 percent at least one location elsewhere, mostly the UK; a posting can count in more than one. Within the US, roles were spread across nearly every state, with Texas (Austin, Dallas, and Houston), Southern California (San Diego and Irvine), and the Washington, DC area all posting hundreds. If you cannot move, searching your own region by role usually turns up more than you expect. Remote internships exist, but they are a small slice: 732 Summer 2026 postings offered a remote option and 655 were remote only. They also came late. Only 2.4 percent of the internships up by October 1, 2025 were remote, rising to 4.4 percent by the end of the season. The next cycle looks similar so far: as of October 20, 2026, 60 of the 4,127 Summer 2027 internships on the tracker, 1.5 percent, offered a remote option. How to use location in your search
- If you can relocate, put New York, the Bay Area, and one or two of Toronto, Chicago, Austin, Boston, Atlanta, or Seattle at the top of your list. That is where the volume is.
- If you cannot relocate, search your own city and state by role, not by famous company. Smaller local employers make up a large share of the market.
- Do not wait for remote. At 4 percent of postings, a remote-only search skips most of the season. Apply to remote roles as a bonus, not a plan.
- Read every location on a posting. One in nine lists several cities, and the one near you may be among them.
The hubs have the most roles per city, but most internships are spread across hundreds of other places. The search that works covers the hubs you can reach and the region you already live in.
