When do hardware engineering internships open?
Hardware internships fill up later than any other tech field. Here is the timeline from 2,216 Summer 2026 postings, and who posts first.

The short answer
Hardware engineering internships fill up later than any other tech field. In the tracker that feeds Arial's job board, only 16 percent of the 2,216 Summer 2026 hardware internships were up by October 1, 2025, 39 percent by New Year, and 62 percent by March 1, 2026, against 69 percent of all internships. March was the busiest month, and 38 percent of hardware roles appeared after March 1. Defense and chip companies post the most: RTX (115), Western Digital (51), L3Harris Technologies (48), Marvell (45), and Moog (42). L3Harris and RTX led the early wave. So apply to the defense and semiconductor programs in the fall, but expect most of your applications to go out between February and May. Hardware is also almost never remote: only 10 of the 2,216 postings offered a remote option.
Electrical, embedded, and chip students often hear the software advice: apply in September or miss out. For hardware, that advice is early. Hardware internships are the slowest tech field to fill up, and the spring is where most of them are.
What we measured
The SimplifyJobs internship tracker, which feeds Arial's job board, tags each posting with a field, including one for hardware. We read one snapshot of the tracker per month from July 2025 to August 2026 and dated each Summer 2026 internship by the first snapshot that listed it, counting only postings the tracker shows publicly. The tracker renamed the field partway through the season ("Hardware Engineering" became "Hardware"), so we counted both labels together. That gave us 2,216 hardware internships at 511 companies. The field is broad: it includes embedded, firmware, chip design, test, and systems roles, and some software roles at hardware companies. The July 1, 2025 snapshot is our first, and monthly snapshots miss anything posted and removed within a month. Hardware runs behind the rest of the market

Hardware stays several points behind the overall market until spring, and on March 1 it was still the furthest behind of the major fields, at 62 percent. Then it catches up fast: March 2026 added about 17 percent of the season, the most of any month, and February and April added another 14 and 12 percent. By May 1, hardware and the overall market were both at 91 percent. Who posts hardware internships first
Defense and semiconductor companies dominate. Over the season, the companies with the most hardware internship postings were RTX (115), Western Digital (51), L3Harris Technologies (48), Marvell (45), Moog (42), Nokia (34), Northrop Grumman (30), and Intel (27). The early wave was led by the same group: by October 1, 2025, L3Harris had 40 hardware internships up, RTX 29, and Marvell 17. Hardware is also more concentrated than software, data, or product: the top 10 companies posted 20 percent of it, against 11 percent for AI, ML, and data. Titles hint at a split inside the field. Internships with embedded or firmware in the title were 22 percent posted by October 1, 2025, and 54 percent by New Year, well ahead of hardware overall (39 percent) and even the whole market (46 percent). Test and validation titles were the latest, at 8 percent by October 1 and 33 percent by New Year. Many hardware titles are generic ("Engineering Intern"), so treat this as a pattern, not a rule. Plan to be on site
Only 10 of the 2,216 Summer 2026 hardware internships offered a remote option, under 1 percent, against about 5 percent of software and data internships. Labs, test benches, and cleared facilities do not work from home. Where the roles are matters more in hardware than in any other field, so search by city early. A month-by-month plan for a hardware internship
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Aug to Sep | Finish a one-page resume that leads with a hardware project: the board, the tools, and what you measured. |
| Oct to Dec | Apply to the defense and semiconductor programs as they post. Embedded roles tend to come early. |
| Jan to Feb | Postings pick up. Keep a weekly routine, and look beyond the largest names. |
| Mar to May | The busiest stretch of the season: more than a third of hardware internships appear after March 1. |

Hardware students who give up after a quiet fall miss the busiest part of their own season. The spring is when hardware hires.
