When do summer internship applications open?
What a full year of internship postings shows about when roles open, and a month-by-month plan for applying.

The short answer
Summer internship applications open almost a year ahead, and they keep opening for months after that. We tracked the Summer 2026 cycle month by month on the tracker that feeds Arial's job board: Amazon and Salesforce had postings up by July 1, 2025, Apple, Capital One, and Citadel by August 1, and Google, Meta, and Microsoft by September 1. Those early movers were the minority. Only 22 percent of the 16,488 postings were up by October 1, fewer than half by New Year, and 31 percent appeared after March 1, 2026. So have your resume ready by August, apply to large tech and finance companies from August through October, then keep checking every week through spring, because most roles open later than students expect.
Most students start looking for a summer internship in the winter, which is five or six months after the first big companies opened theirs. Most advice stops at "apply early." We wanted the actual calendar, so we measured it.
What we measured
Arial's job board is fed by the SimplifyJobs internship tracker, a public list of internship postings that is updated through the day. The tracker keeps its full history on GitHub, so we read one snapshot of it per month from July 2025 to August 2026 and recorded the first month each Summer 2026 internship appeared. Counting only postings the tracker shows publicly, that gave us 16,488 distinct postings. Two caveats: the tracker leans toward software, data, hardware, product, and quant roles, and a posting can show up on it a little after the company publishes it. Monthly snapshots are precise to the month and miss any posting added and removed within the same month, so the totals are a floor, but they are enough to see the shape of the season. The big names open almost a year ahead
The first Summer 2026 internships at well-known companies were up by the summer of 2025, roughly a year before the start date. The date below is the first monthly snapshot where each company had a Summer 2026 internship on the tracker; the July 1 snapshot is our first, so those companies may have posted even earlier. (SimplifyJobs internship tracker, monthly snapshots July 2025 to August 2026 and the October 16, 2026 file (the repository is renamed for each summer))
| On the tracker by | Companies with a Summer 2026 internship up |
|---|---|
| Jul 1, 2025 | Amazon, Salesforce |
| Aug 1, 2025 | Apple, Capital One, Citadel, Two Sigma |
| Sep 1, 2025 | Google, Meta, Microsoft, Jane Street, Goldman Sachs, Tesla, IBM, Databricks |
| Oct 1, 2025 | NVIDIA, Stripe |
These companies get far more applicants than they have seats, and they review applications as they come in. If one of them is on your list, apply in the first weeks after the role opens, which means late summer or early fall of the year before your internship.
Most internships open later than you think
The early movers are a small share of the market. Here is how the full Summer 2026 season filled in: (SimplifyJobs internship tracker, monthly snapshots July 2025 to August 2026 and the October 16, 2026 file (the repository is renamed for each summer))
| Date | Share of Summer 2026 internships posted so far |
|---|---|
| Sep 1, 2025 | 7% |
| Oct 1, 2025 | 22% |
| Dec 1, 2025 | 40% |
| Jan 1, 2026 | 46% |
| Mar 1, 2026 | 69% |
| May 1, 2026 | 92% |
| Jun 1, 2026 | 96% |
More than half of the season's internships appeared after New Year, and almost a third after March 1. The late-season mix also shifted: hardware roles and companies with only a handful of postings made up a bigger share of what opened after New Year. Employers describe the same pattern: in NACE's Job Outlook 2026 spring update, spring accounts for 27 percent of internship recruiting, and NACE says the spring share is increasing. If you missed the fall rush, the season is far from over. (NACE, Job Outlook 2026: Spring Update summary, April 2026)
A month-by-month plan for applying
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Jun to Jul | Get your resume to one page and pick the roles you want. List your target companies, starting with the big names that open first. |
| Aug to Oct | Apply to large tech and finance companies as their roles open. It is also career fair season, so bring a resume you can hand over. |
| Nov to Dec | Keep checking every week. New roles still appear at a steady pace, and earlier applications may turn into interviews. |
| Jan to Apr | The long tail: almost half the season's roles (46 percent) open here, many at companies with only a few openings. |
| May to Jun | Late openings still appear. Keep applying until you have an offer you want. |

Where the Summer 2027 season stands
The next cycle is following the same pattern. As of October 16, 2026, about 4,000 Summer 2027 internships have been posted to the tracker, about 3,000 of them in August and September 2026, and more than 40 percent of all 4,000 are already closed. Going by the Summer 2026 season, that is still only a fraction of the roles that will open between now and next summer, but the ones that are open now will not stay open long. (SimplifyJobs internship tracker, monthly snapshots July 2025 to August 2026 and the October 16, 2026 file (the repository is renamed for each summer))
The timeline rewards two habits: starting early for the handful of companies that open first, and not stopping when the fall rush ends. Most of the season happens after most students have stopped looking.
