When do quant internships open?
Quant and trading internships open months before the rest of the market. Here is the timeline from 402 postings, and which firms post first.

The short answer
Quant internships open earlier than almost anything else. In the tracker that feeds Arial's job board, 42 percent of Summer 2026 quant and trading internships were posted by October 1, 2025, against 22 percent of all internships, and 65 percent were up by New Year. The first wave was up by July and August 2025: Optiver, Citadel, Hudson River Trading, Tower Research Capital, IMC, Akuna Capital, and Five Rings all had roles up by August 1, with Susquehanna (SIG), Jump Trading, Point72, and Goldman Sachs following by September 1. So if quant is your target, have your resume and interview prep ready by mid-summer the year before, apply in the first weeks a role opens, and keep checking through the fall. The next cycle is already moving: by October 20, 2026, more than half of the 330 Summer 2027 quant internships on the tracker had closed.
Quant trading and research internships are a small market with a reputation for opening early. We wanted to know how early, and which firms go first, so we measured it from the same data that feeds Arial's job board.
What we measured
The SimplifyJobs internship tracker tags each posting with a category, including one for quant. We read one snapshot of the tracker per month from July 2025 to August 2026 and recorded the first month each Summer 2026 internship appeared, counting only postings the tracker shows publicly. That gave us 402 quant internships at 155 firms, and 16,488 internships overall to compare against. The count misses some roles: some firms, Jane Street among them, list many of their quant internships on the tracker with no term attached, so those fall outside a Summer 2026 count, and an older quantitative finance tag used for part of the season is left out. Treat these as the core quant market rather than all of it. The July 1, 2025 snapshot is our first, so a firm listed "by July 1" may have posted earlier, and monthly snapshots miss anything posted and removed within a month. (SimplifyJobs internship tracker, monthly snapshots from July 2025 (through August 2026 for the Summer 2026 season, through October 2026 for later terms) and the October 20, 2026 file (the repository is renamed for each summer))

| Sep 1, 2025 | 19% | 7% |

| Jan 1, 2026 | 65% | 46% |
| Mar 1, 2026 | 81% | 69% |
By October 1, 2025, more than four in ten quant internships for the following summer were already up, about double the share for internships overall. Half the quant season was posted by November 1. The overall market did not reach that point until after New Year. Which firms post first
The earliest movers were the large trading firms. This is the first monthly snapshot in which each firm had a Summer 2026 quant internship on the tracker: (SimplifyJobs internship tracker, monthly snapshots from July 2025 (through August 2026 for the Summer 2026 season, through October 2026 for later terms) and the October 20, 2026 file (the repository is renamed for each summer))
| On the tracker by | Firms |
|---|---|
| Jul 1, 2025 | AQR |
| Aug 1, 2025 | Optiver, Citadel, Hudson River Trading, Tower Research Capital, IMC, Akuna Capital, Virtu, Five Rings |
| Sep 1, 2025 | Susquehanna (SIG), Citadel Securities, Jump Trading, Point72, Chicago Trading Company, Goldman Sachs, PIMCO |
SIG alone posted 36 Summer 2026 quant internships, the most of any firm, which says more about how it splits roles across teams and offices than about how many interns it hires. Posting counts are not hiring counts.
A timeline for a quant internship search
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| May to Jun | Finish a one-page resume that leads with math, programming, and any trading or research projects, and start checking for early postings: AQR was up by July 1. |
| Jul to Aug | Apply to the large trading firms as their roles open. Many review applications as they arrive. |
| Sep to Oct | The second wave: more firms, banks, and asset managers post. Keep applying weekly. |
| Nov to Mar | The tail: smaller firms and late openings. Fewer roles, but still worth checking. |

Where the Summer 2027 quant season stands
The next cycle follows the same pattern. As of October 20, 2026, the tracker lists 330 Summer 2027 quant internships, and only 152 of them are still open. If you are aiming for Summer 2027, the early wave has already passed; apply to what is open now and keep checking through the fall. Quant recruiting runs on its own early calendar. Students who treat it like the rest of the internship market usually start looking after half the roles are already up.
