When do software engineering internships open?
When software internships get posted, from 5,054 Summer 2026 postings: how software compares with other fields, and a month-by-month plan.

The short answer
Software engineering internships open from late summer of the year before and keep opening until spring. In the tracker that feeds Arial's job board, 22 percent of the 5,054 Summer 2026 software internships were up by October 1, 2025, 44 percent by New Year, and 33 percent appeared after March 1, 2026. September was the busiest month, with February and March close behind. TikTok and ByteDance had the most software internships up by September 1, 2025, followed by Palantir. Software opens a little earlier than data, hardware, and product roles, but far later than quant. So have your resume ready by August, apply through September and October, then keep checking every week through spring, because more than half of software roles open after New Year.
Most advice says software internships open "in the fall." That is half right. The first wave does come in September and October, but most software internships are posted later, and the spring is busier than students expect.
What we measured
Arial's job board is fed by the SimplifyJobs internship tracker, which tags every posting with a field. We read one snapshot of the tracker per month from July 2025 to August 2026 and dated each Summer 2026 internship by the first snapshot that listed it, counting only postings the tracker shows publicly. The tracker renamed its field labels partway through the season ("Software Engineering" became "Software"), so we counted the old and new labels together. That gave us 5,054 software internships at 1,629 companies. About 640 postings from the first months of the season carry no field or a catch-all label and are left out of the field comparison. The July 1, 2025 snapshot is our first, so "by July 1" may include earlier postings. There were two waves. September 2025 added about 14 percent of the season's software internships, the most of any month, led by defense, industrial, and finance employers such as RTX. The second wave came after New Year: February and March 2026 together added more than a quarter of the season. If you stopped looking in December, you missed more than half of the software internships posted for that summer. Software starts a little ahead of data, hardware, and product. Data and product catch up by New Year; hardware stays behind, with only 39 percent of its internships up by New Year. Quant is the outlier, with more than four in ten roles posted by October 1. Who posts software internships first
The early wave is concentrated. By September 1, 2025, TikTok and ByteDance together had about a quarter of all the software internships on the tracker, and Palantir was next. Over the whole season, the companies with the most software internship postings were RTX (103), TikTok (95), Nokia (91), General Dynamics Mission Systems (77), and Disney (69). Many familiar names post only a handful each, so the early weeks reward students who are ready, not students who wait for a favorite company.
