When do data science and AI internships open?
When data science, AI, and machine learning internships get posted, from 6,970 Summer 2026 postings, and why this field runs later than you think.
By Kevin Tang · Updated October 2026
The short answer
Data science, AI, and machine learning internships open later than most students expect. In the tracker that feeds Arial's job board, only 16 percent of the 6,970 Summer 2026 AI, ML, and data internships were up by October 1, 2025, against 22 percent of all internships, and 44 percent by New Year. The busiest stretch was February and March 2026, which together added 29 percent of the season, and 31 percent of roles appeared after March 1. Titles that say data science without mentioning machine learning or AI were the exception, slightly ahead of the market at 23 percent by October 1. Microsoft, TikTok, Nokia, Meta, and Disney posted the most. So apply to the early roles in the fall, but plan your heaviest search for January through April, and keep checking weekly until May. A quarter of the postings that list eligible degrees do not include a bachelor's, so read the eligibility line before you spend time on an application.
Data science, AI, and machine learning internships are the biggest category on the tracker that feeds Arial's job board, and they start later than software in the fall. If you copy a software engineer's fall rush, you will be early for most of this market.
What we measured
The SimplifyJobs internship tracker tags each posting with a field. We read one snapshot of the tracker per month from July 2025 to August 2026 and dated each Summer 2026 internship by the first snapshot that listed it, counting only postings the tracker shows publicly. The tracker renamed this field partway through the season ("Data Science, AI & Machine Learning" became "AI/ML/Data"), so we counted both labels together. That gave us 6,970 internships at 1,832 companies, out of 16,488 internships overall. The July 1, 2025 snapshot is our first, and monthly snapshots miss anything posted and removed within a month. | Date | AI, ML, and data internships posted | All internships posted |
|---|---|---|
| Sep 1, 2025 | 4% | 7% |
| Oct 1, 2025 | 16% | 22% |
| Nov 1, 2025 | 24% | 29% |
| Jan 1, 2026 | 44% | 46% |
| Mar 1, 2026 | 69% | 69% |
| May 1, 2026 | 91% | 91% |
Data roles start slower than the market and catch up by spring. By October 1, 2025, 16 percent were up, against 22 percent of all internships. The gap closes over the winter, and by March 1, 2026, both stood at 69 percent. The single busiest month was February 2026, which added about 15 percent of the season, and March added almost 14 percent more. More than half of the season, 56 percent, was posted after New Year. Timing by job title
The field mixes very different jobs, so we split it by title. A title that mentions machine learning or AI counts as AI and ML even if it also says data science; then data science, data engineering, and analyst titles, in that order. About a third of the titles fit none of these (for example "Technology Intern"), and are left out of this table.

| Title mentions | Postings | Up by Oct 1, 2025 | Up by Jan 1, 2026 | Up by Mar 1, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Machine learning or AI | 1,817 | 16% | 44% | 67% |
| Analyst or analytics | 1,528 | 17% | 41% | 68% |
| Data science | 767 | 23% | 48% | 74% |
| Data engineering | 302 | 22% | 46% | 68% |
Data science and data engineering titles ran slightly ahead of the other data titles, but none of these groups behaved like quant, which had 42 percent of its roles up by October 1. Whatever kind of data role you want, the spring matters as much as the fall. Who posts data internships, and who posts first
Over the whole season, the companies with the most AI, ML, and data internship postings were Microsoft (130), TikTok (106), Nokia (85), Meta (83), Disney (82), and Genentech (68). The early wave was led by TikTok, Meta, and ByteDance, which had 45, 29, and 22 postings up by October 1, 2025. But the field is spread thin: the top 10 companies posted only 11 percent of it, and 823 companies posted exactly one. Check the degree line before you apply
This is the field where degree requirements matter most. Of the AI, ML, and data internships that list eligible degrees (71 percent of them), 75 percent include a bachelor's degree, 25 percent do not (almost all of those are for master's or PhD students), and 22 percent mention a PhD. For comparison, 91 percent of hardware internships that list degrees include a bachelor's. Research and machine learning roles carry most of the graduate-only postings, so undergraduates do best on analyst, data science, and data engineering titles. A month-by-month plan for a data internship
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Aug to Sep | Finish a one-page resume that leads with a data project: the question, the data, the method, and the result. |
| Oct to Dec | Apply to the big tech and media companies as they post. About a quarter of the season is up by November 1. |
| Jan to Apr | The main season. February and March were the busiest months; check new postings every week. |
| May on | Late openings, often at smaller companies. Fewer roles, but less competition. |

Data internships reward stamina more than speed. Students who are still applying in March see most of the season; students who stop in December see less than half of it.
