Internships for master's and PhD students: who hires and when

How many of 16,488 Summer 2026 tech internships listed master's and PhD students, which employers post the graduate-only roles, and why those roles open later.

By Kevin Tang · Updated October 2026

The short answer

Master's and PhD students have a real internship market, but it is smaller and later than the undergraduate one. In the tracker that feeds Arial's job board, 4,331 of 16,488 Summer 2026 tech internships (26 percent) listed a master's degree, and 1,653 (10 percent) listed a PhD. Another 4,682 (28 percent) did not list a degree at all. Only 1,751 postings, 11 percent, were graduate-only, meaning they listed a graduate degree and no bachelor's; 69 percent of those were AI, machine learning, and data roles, led by Meta, TikTok, Microsoft, Waymo, and ByteDance. Graduate-only roles post later: 19 percent were up by October 1, 2025, against 30 percent of bachelor's-only roles, and about 30 percent posted in January and February 2026. So apply in the fall to the roles that list your degree, and plan a second push after New Year.

Most internship advice is written for undergraduates. If you are in a master's or PhD program, the useful questions are different: how many roles list your degree, which ones are reserved for graduate students, and when they post. We answered them from a full season of the tracker behind Arial's job board.

What we measured

We read one snapshot of the SimplifyJobs internship tracker per month from July 2025 to August 2026 and counted every Summer 2026 internship once, using only postings the tracker shows publicly: 16,488 postings. Each posting carries the degree levels the tracker assigns to it, and a posting can list several. We used the latest version of each posting. We call a posting graduate-only when it lists a master's, PhD, or MBA and does not list a bachelor's or associate degree. The degree tags summarize the posting, not every line of its eligibility text, so always read the posting itself. Monthly snapshots miss roles that are posted and removed within the same month, so these counts are a floor. A posting can list several degrees, so the shares add up to more than 100 percent. The master's market is mostly shared with undergraduates: 3,201 of the 4,331 postings that listed a master's also listed a bachelor's. The graduate-only market is smaller, 1,751 postings, and 565 of those listed only a PhD. For a master's student, the realistic pool is the 4,331 postings that list your degree plus the 4,682 that list none, as long as the dates fit. Line chart comparing Summer 2026 internships open only to graduate students with internships that list only a bachelor's degree. Graduate-only: 4 percent posted by September 1, 2025, 19 percent by October 1, 30 percent by November 1, 34 percent by January 1, 2026, 64 percent by March 1, and 91 percent by May 1. Bachelor's-only: 6, 30, 41, 43, 66, and 92 percent on the same dates.
Graduate-only internships trail bachelor's-only roles all fall and nearly catch up by March. 1,751 graduate-only postings, SimplifyJobs tracker.

Undergraduate roles are front-loaded: 30 percent of bachelor's-only internships were up by October 1, 2025. Graduate-only roles had a fall wave too, then almost nothing in November and December, and then about 30 percent of them posted in January and February 2026. A graduate student who stops looking after a quiet December misses a large share of the season. The 1,751 graduate-only postings came from 514 companies, led by big tech research groups and self-driving and AI labs. PhD-only roles are the most research-heavy: of the 565, 71 percent had research, PhD, or scientist in the title, and 82 percent were AI, machine learning, and data roles, led by Meta (38), TikTok (29), and Microsoft (29). Master's-only roles look different, with chip and hardware companies such as Marvell (16) and KLA (12) and the trading firm Susquehanna (16) near the top behind Meta (30). Quant here counts only the tracker's main quant label, as the quant guide does. Every field lists master's students on roughly a quarter of its postings, but graduate-only roles cluster in AI and data and in quant research. In software, graduate students mostly compete in the shared pool, so the same timing and volume rules as undergraduates apply. How to plan a graduate internship search

  • Apply to shared roles that list your degree in the fall, on the same schedule as undergraduates.
  • Expect the graduate-only and research roles in two waves: one in September and October, and a bigger one from January through March.
  • Read the graduation window on every posting. A master's student finishing next spring may be outside a role meant for students returning in the fall.
  • Lead your resume with research, publications, or a thesis project when the role is research-heavy, and with shipped work when it is an engineering role.

Graduate students have fewer roles reserved for them than undergraduates, and those roles run on a later calendar. Apply broadly in the fall, then come back hard after New Year, when most graduate-only roles post.

Common questions

Can master's students apply for internships?
Yes. 4,331 Summer 2026 tech internships on the tracker listed a master's degree, and 3,201 of them also listed a bachelor's, so most of those are open to both. Another 28 percent of postings listed no degree; read the eligibility and graduation dates in each one before you apply.
When do PhD internships open?
Later than most internships. Of the 565 Summer 2026 internships that listed only a PhD, 13 percent were up by October 1, 2025, 27 percent by January 1, 2026, and 60 percent by March 1. Meta, TikTok, Microsoft, ByteDance, and Uber posted the most.
Are graduate-only internships mostly in AI and data?
Mostly. AI, machine learning, and data roles made up 1,208 of the 1,751 graduate-only postings. By share, quant is the most graduate-heavy field: 24 percent of quant internships were graduate-only, against 4 percent of software internships.
Should a master's student apply to internships that list only a bachelor's degree?
Read the eligibility line first. 6,702 postings, 41 percent, listed only a bachelor's degree. Some of those may mean current undergraduates only, while others accept anyone enrolled in a degree; the graduation dates and enrollment requirement in the posting decide it.
